Chatty Mommies

Tonight the kids were fine - it was two chatty moms who sat in the corner and were talking almost nonstop - very quietly, but still it was annoying. The kids didn't even seem to notice, I guess it was only me it distracted, but ideas anyone? Thanks.

I read Penguin by Polly Dunbar because I think it's hysterical and I did get a few jaw drops from the kids. I also read Tacky the Penguin, Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus, and New Socks (why is that book so funny?). The books went over well. The kids were super cute when I asked them to do Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes as fast as they could - I had to laugh. Also, this group always sings along with every song, so that's really encouraging.

Maybe try doing something that involves passing something out to everyone. And make a big deal when you give them their shaker/puppet/scarf/costume(!) and say, "You came out on a Monday night...you better sing along!" or whatever. Make a light but pointed comment along the lines of how great participation is. It's easier to convince them to DO something else than to STOP doing something!

I agree with Rory. I had the same issue at my toddler 9:30 on Monday with a pair of nannies who wouldn't stop talking. I usually say something like, "OK, I need everyone's help now. You know my singing is not the greatest."

You can also try doing something in a whisper, then their talking will be very obvious! I like to do the little mouse is sleeping, because you get to say Shhhhhh.
